2026 Bahrain Grand Prix: Sepang Homecoming

The Formula One paddock heads to a familiar yet unexpected venue this weekend as the iconic Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia hosts its first race since 2017 under the Bahrain Grand Prix banner.

Officially designated as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, this unique sixteenth round of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship takes place on Sunday, October 4, 2026. While the circuit is deeply beloved for its challenging layout and unpredictable tropical weather, its return under the "Bahrain" banner is the result of regional circumstances that saw the postponement of the original Middle Eastern rounds in early spring.

Following collaborative efforts, an agreement was struck for Sepang to host the event on a one-off basis, with Bahrain retaining all ticket pricing rights and race proceeds. The addition fits seamlessly into a grueling triple-header stretch alongside Azerbaijan and Singapore, bringing the 2026 calendar to 23 races.

Grid penalties and fierce form are shaking up the order. Alpine's Franco Colapinto will serve a five-place grid penalty following a collision at the previous round in Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, practice sessions have already showcased blistering pace from Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

Circuit Challenges and Tyre Strategy

The Sepang International Circuit is celebrated for its demanding layout featuring long high-speed straights, wide sweeping corners, and notoriously heavy braking zones. Combined with Malaysia's abrasive asphalt, high track temperatures, and unpredictable tropical downpours, it remains one of the ultimate tests for car setup and driver endurance.
